As part of the Work Experience Program, students are required to show some understanding of Occupational Health and Safety issues.
Safe@work is a web-based Occupational Health and Safety Program developed by the Department of Education that all Work Experience students have to complete before placement. This program will assist students in their preparation for Work Experience and increase their awareness of Occupational Health and Safety in the workplace. Students can practise the multiple choice test at home and then undertake the test at school, so it can be verified that the student is able to complete it successfully. There are two tests to undertake: The ’General Test’ which all potential Work Experience students have to undertake, and an ‘Industry Specific’ one. This is determined where the student is to work, be it in retail, automotive or hairdressing, etc.
The Safe@work tests must be supervised. To book a time to complete a Safe@work test plase see Sarah Hack in the Careers Office. Students have to complete a preliminary form with the Work Experience details and then the official form is generated using this information. The official Work Experience form needs to be signed by the student, parent or guardian, the employer and finally returned to Lilydal High School for the Principal to sign. Copies are made and given to the student, employer and the original is kept for the school records. Usually Work Experience is undertaken for one or two weeks depending on the dates specified by the employer. At the end of the Work Experience placement, the employer fills out an evaluation form for the student and this is a useful addition in the student’s resume.
Some large companies have specified dates when Work Experience is able to be undertaken and some companies do not participate in the program. The Victorian Police only allows one student per school year to be involved in their Work Experience Program. Some companies have minimum age restrictions so may not allow students Under 16 years to participate. For further information please see Miss Hack in the Careers Office. ____________________________________________________________________________ MIPs - Managed Individual PathwaysMIPs Program The MIPs program ensures that all students 15 years and older have current individual pathway plans and associated support to enable a successful transition through the post-compulsory years to further education, training or full-time employment. Currently, all Year 12 students are being individually interviewed by one of our MIPs counsellors. The purpose of these 20 minute interviews is to review the student’s pathway plans, and discuss their future pathways. For most of our students this is their third MIPs interview, and for most, it will be their final interview. Later in the year (August), all Year 10 and 11 students and parents will be invited to attend an interview on our MIPs days. In Term 4, all Year 9 students will be involved in group interviews designed to get them started on their pathway.
What are pathways? After leaving school, our students can choose between:
As a MIPs counsellor our role is to help our students identify their educational goals, employment goals and the pathways that can travel along to achieve these goals. Information is an important tool when it comes to making choices and decisions. How can parents help? As a parent, you play a key role in helping your child make career choices. To provide the best possible support and guidance, you need current information on the many pathways available to your children. You can help your child by being positive about their ideas and chances of finding a satisfying career path. Consider the suitability of different jobs and help them identify their ATTRIBUTES, INTERESTS, LIKES and EXPERIENCES. Talk about their HOPES and VISIONS for the future and where they want to work and study. Talk about the world of work, share some of your own work and life experiences and ask some questions, such as:
Where can you find information? All Year 10 students receive a ‘Job Guide’. This is more than just a book about jobs. It has information about choosing a job type, matching likes/dislikes to a range of jobs as well as the levels of training needed. It also contains a pull-out parent guide. There are a number of good websites that you can access that will give information. Your MIPs counsellors for 2009 are Kath Rudd, Sharon Wall, Kristy Mays and Leigh Callander. There are many more detailed in the Job Guide. Parents are welcome to contact the school and arrange an interview with a MIPs counsellor, particularly if your child is experiencing difficulties and needs assistance in succeeding at school and completing their schooling to the highest level possible (Year 10 as a minimum), and in gathering information about potential careers. AIM of the Program The Managed Individual Pathways (MIPs) program was introduced to help all students 15 years and over through the final years of school and into further education, training or secure employment. Each student has individual pathway plans and support to help them achieve their goals. MIPs aim to help students to: 1. Make a smooth transition from compulsory schooling to further education, training and employment. 2. Develop skills to manage their pathways throughout their working lives. 3. Develop their knowledge, understanding and experience of opportunities in education, training and employment. The program also includes follow-up of early school leavers (those who don’t complete Year 12) at the time of leaving and six months later. At TAFE Institutes and Adult Community Education organisations, young people 15 to 19 years old who have not yet completed Year 12 and who are not in full time employment can participate in a Youth Pathways Program, which incorporates MIPs support within a training or education program.
