Select Entry Accelerated Learning - S.E.A.L.

2009 S.E.A.L ENROLMENTS NOW BEING ACCEPTED

Background

Lilydale High School has always demonstrated an active interest in curriculum development which facilitates excellent outcomes for all students.  To better address the needs of students who demonstrate above-average ability, high levels of task commitment and high levels of creativity, an Accelerated Learning Program was implemented in 1994.

Curriculum Provision

The Accelerated Learning Program addresses the needs of students who qualify as gifted and talented students.

These students’ needs are accommodated by a curriculum which:
  • Provides opportunity to explore more abstract, complex and in-depth content.
  • Gives students the essential opportunity to work with their intellectual peers.
  • Enables students to function independently at their academic potential.
  • Covers content at a pace suitable for these students, without unnecessary repetition.
  • Fosters independent student learning skills.
  • Offers further enrichment for students with high level skill in a particular field.
  • In the third year, students also complete a VCE subject.
In the following years, students continue their VCE, selecting from the offered VCE studies, including Vocational Education and Training subjects.  University enhancement studies are available for students with advanced skills in an area of study.  Thus, students in this program may complete their secondary schooling in five years or undertake a broader range of subjects in VCE and complete their schooling in six years.

During their time at Lilydale High School students are encouraged to participate in the wide range of enrichment and sporting activities available at the school.

    Selection and Testing

The selection processes are designed to identify students for whom this type of program is appropriate.  The selection process will involve:

    • Aptitude testing
    • Achievement levels
    • Information from parents
    • Information from primary teacher
    • Interviews with short-listed applicants
    • Selection of students for this program generally takes place in April and May of the students’ Grade 6 year
